The magnets meant to induce a shift in the magnetic field when they are pulled apart. This shift will then be picked up by the phone’s magnetometer and is being converted into a click by most of the common cardboard apps. Click: Start. Click: Stop. Click: Select. and so on.
Not all phones support the magnet click equally well – some models may not pick up on the magnet field conversion right away and thus may require several clicks until the app reacts.
The magnets are too weak to have any disturbing or damaging effect on the phone or flash drives.
Since these are high quality magnets, any reasonable caution when operating with strong magnets is also advised here, i.e. pace makers etc.
How do the lenses work?
The lenses magnify your vision when you peer through the VRoggles cardboard viewer (which was heavily inspired by the original Google I/O conference model). This magnifies every pixel, thus older phones with a lower resolution than Full HD (1920×1080) may show a “grid effect”. The only solution that applies here is to upgrade to a higher resolution phone.
For the DIY version, make sure to insert lenses correctly, so that the ideal focal length can be achieved.
Is my phone compatible?
All iOS and android phones are compatible in theory, yet some restrictions may apply.
The phone should have a screen size of 4.3 inch up to 5.0 inch. Smaller phones (e.g. iPhone 4S) do not fit the box and the focal length of the lenses, larger phones (e.g. Samsung Galaxy Note 3) will not properly fit either – with some manual customization it could possibly be done DIY.
The phones must have a gyroscope, magnetometer and a sufficiently fast processor, since the apps have to process 2 images at the same time – one for each eye.
Are you sending from China?
No, we print and assemble VRoggles in Germany and use express shipping to all of Europe which ensures delivery within a few days. We also deliver internationally, that will take a longer time to ship though.
